The Balearics led the way in July in the occupancy of tourist apartments, having registered 86% occupancy, with the level of apartment occupancy across Spain having risen by 6%. The Canary Islands formed the region with the highest overall level of demand - 2.6 million overnight stays in July - but these were down by one per cent compared with 2014. Of the Balearic Islands, there were 1.1 million overnight stays in Majorca, while Minorca, with 90.2%, had the highest occupancy level.
The tourist apartments are those which are officially classified as such and which are often owned by hotel groups. They should not, therefore, be confused with private apartments for tourist rental. They form part of a registered non-hotel accommodation sector that also comprises camping (not a factor in Majorca) and rural accommodation and hostels.
