Readers, especially those from Scotland and Ireland, will be pleased to learn that the regional government is seeking to introduce greater competition to winter air routes between the Balearics and the principal European tourism markets.
The new director-general for ports and airports, Xavier Ramis, says that this is fundamental to resolving problems of seasonality and the lack of air connection in the off-season.
The aim, therefore, is to turn around a situation as exists at present, namely that from late October to late March, when airlines’ winter schedules are in operation, the frequency of flights and the routes to Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza are reduced by as much as 85%, compared with the summer months.
Ramis believes that there are possibilities for operating in winter, but adds that it is essential to have tourism products in order that new routes can function in a viable fashion.
