This week, Ryanair and Monarch have announced new winter flights from Palma to England.
But, it appears that while most airlines which operate in and out of Palma’s Son Sant Joan airport are guaranteeing that they will fly for at least eight months of the year, and they have modified their schedules for the whole of this summer in order to meet tourism demand - from mainland Spain and Europe - which is expected to realise an increase in passenger traffic by almost 3% - the UK does not appear there or the local government’s top priority.
At the end of a meeting of the committee for air routes in Palma, the director-general of the Balearic ports and airports, Antonio Deudero, spoke about data on passenger movement during the last winter season, which had indicated a discernible change in trend; in other words, numbers were up.
He said that “objectives we set ourselves have been met” in that airlines are scheduling more seats, frequencies and routes. “If we add to this the fact that this summer season we will see an improvement over 2014, the end result is that we will have a tourist season that is better and which realises more visitors.”
