Majorca is apparently getting braced for a record summer season and it is all about to kick off over Easter with 80 percent of the island’s hotel open for business. The President of the Majorcan Hotel Federation, Aurelio Vazquez, announced yesterday that 80 percent of the island’s hotels are going to open for Easter, which falls very early this year, and that, at the moment, average occupancy rates are between 70 and 75 percent.
Vazquez said that the outlook for Easter is very encouraging and, by coming at the beginning of April “it will earn us an extra couple of months” - providing they remain open.
Traditionally, many of the hotels which have opened for Easter subsequently close during the trough between the end of Easter and the start of the summer season.
However, the federation claims that hoteliers are feeling much more confident this year and will remain open.
“We are on the verge of what we think is going to be a record season and going to lead to a significant drop in unemployment,” Vazquez said.
The federation boss was referring to a deal which has been reached between Majorcan hoteliers and the Balearic government to cooperate in the creation of between 500 and 600 jobs for the over 45’s this season. The Balearic President, Jose Ramon Bauza and Vazquez signed the agreement yesterday as part of a drive to reduce the number of unemployed, especially the long term, whose benefits may have run out.
