Cairn Energy, the Edinburgh based British energy company which has been granted permission to prospect for oil and gas in Balearic waters, is in trouble with the Indian tax office.
Prospecting in local waters has sparked a massive outcry from local residents in the Balearics and international marine protection organisations, but the Spanish government maintains it still aims to push ahead with the hunt for oil and gas innational waters in order to develop its own energy industry because Spain has to import 90% of its liquid energy.
And key to that is Cairn Energy which was granted by permission by the previous Socialist government.
But, the energy company has been hit by a 1 billion pound retrospective tax bill in India where it has a number of interests.
