Palma.—The Majorcan potato harvest has barely kicked off, but early predictions already show the production percentage has already slumped by half.
Local farmers are concerned with the figures, blaming the frost and the cold winds which have hit the island over the past few months for the decline.
The official beginning of the season was yesterday but by the time the harvest began the land was still too wet for the machines to collect the crop.
British market affected
Due to the poor weather, the size and maturing of the potato was lower and slower this year, hence the low expectations from the sector for future sales.
