Sharp increase in rail and metro passengers

Palma.—The new access systems installed at Majorca’s railway and metro stations appear to have proved a success.
The Balearic Minister for Transport and the Environment, Biel Company, yesterday reported that, during the first ten days of the new system being in operation, the number of rail and metro passengers has risen by 49 percent and revenue by 40 percent.
Company said that 141,598 passengers have used either one of the services during the past ten days compared to 94,816 during the same period last year.
And, if the trend continues, the SFM Majorcan Railway Service hopes to handle some eight million passengers this year, 2.5 million more than over the past few years when the average has been around 5.5 million, and that will translate into a two million euro increase in revenue.
