Editorial: Bad news? What bad news?

IF you listen to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy you would  have thought that Spain was an economic powerhouse leading the charge for economic growth in Europe and that all was well in the “garden of Spain.”  Rajoy was atthe G20 meeting in Australia and according to the Spanish PMhe wanted assurances that European Union policies would not dent Spain´s excellent economic growth figures. Now, I don´t want  to ruin the party Mr. Rajoy but Spain still has the highest level of unemployment of any country in the European Union, if not the western world. There are also fears that  Spain´s future economic prospects will be hit by the wave of corruption allegations which continue to sweep through the country and have involved numerous members of Rajoy´s ownparty. And then there is the small matter of Catalonia where an estimated two million people backed a call for independence from Spain. Now whatever Rajoy and his party tell you, two million are a lot of people. So really Rajoy is presiding over a country with a series of unemployment and corruption problems  which is also deeply divided. But not so if you listen to the Prime Minister. Everything is fine and under control and an economic miracle has been produced. But this economic miracle has still not arrived in many parts of Spain, Majorca included. Now, I understand that Rajoy likes to paint a bright picture but sometimes the picture can be just too bright and can simply dazzle you.
