Sharp rise in fatal accidents this year

Palma.—Last year, a total of 37 lives were lost on Balearic roads, so far this year, that total has risen to 44, an increase of 20 percent.
Majorca accounts for  most of the deadly accidents, 35 -  eight have occurred in Ibiza and  one in Formentera.
So far, this year, there have been no fatal accidents in Minorca, according to the Balearic Director General for Traffic.
The two most tragic months of the year so far were June and August with seven fatal accidents in each month while the least tragic were February and November, with only one life lost on the roads in each month.
The latest report also reveals that the majority of the accidents, 25, happened during the day with the rest occurring over night.
And the majority happened on a work day.
None occurred on a bank holiday, although 17 did happen on a weekend.
The data in the report also reveals that between 1 January and 10 November, 28 drivers have been killed, five passengers, eight pedestrians and three cyclists. 33 of the fatalities have been male and 32 of the fatal  victims were Spanish nationals, 11 were from a member of the European Union and one from a non EU state. What is more, 22 of those who lost their lives were either driving or travelling in vehicles which were ten years old or more.
