Palma.—The Balearic Institute for Statistics yesterday revealed that between 7,900 and 9,000 households in the region are having to depend on the pensions of retired members of the family to survive.
According to Ferran Lluch from the institute, these figures are the clearest indication yet of the number of families in which no one has a job and no one is entitled to claim any state benefits.
Lluch explained that grandparents have played an important role in helping their families for years, more recently looking after grand children etc. but lately, they have been forced into helping families out financially by covering mortgage payments, the rent and the bills.
The data was revealed yesterday during the presentation of the Balearic Aging Yearbook Study 2014 at the Balearic University.
