Editorial: A great shame

|

THE announcement that the Cricket Club´s annual bonfire night has been cancelled because of new health and safety regulations is a major blow both to Calvia and the local community. I know for  fact that coach trips were being organised from the East Coast of the island and many people came down from Pollensa and Alcudia just to enjoy the delights of bonfire night.  But obviously safety comes first and Iam sure that the Cricket Club will have taken their decision with a heavy heart, especially as they have agreed to vacant their present premises by the end of the year. A fantastic bonfire night would have meant that the Cricket Club would have left their old home on a high. However, Iknow that the Cricket Club have already  held talks with the Calvia council over new premises for the club. The search continues but Iam sure that a new ground will be found and in the future it will be able to hold a Bonfire night.   It does seem such a shame that the Cricket will have to move and also that they have been forced to cancel their exceptionally popular event. Now, some people are already complaining about the red tape and the health and safety merchants who are ruining our fun. This is far from the point. As I said earlier, safety must come first. I know we are all disappointed but I am sure that one day in the near future the Cricket Club will be able to host events of this type again and I am looking forward to it.
