POLITICAL change is in the air as the by-election results in Britain yesterday morning showed and the Conservative Party are making a big push to get British expatriates to vote in the general election next year. Geoffrey Clifton Brown, Member of Parliament for the Cotswolds who is on holiday on the island at the moment, said that if the Conservatives won the next general election they would abolish the 15-year-rule on expats voting in elections. Under the present system British citizens can only vote in their old constituences if they have lived outside Britain for less than 15 years. Now obviously this state of affairs has been slammed by many expats as “discriminatory” and a campaign is taking place across Europe at the moment calling for the vote. But Clifton Brown said “if the Conservative Party forms the next government we will ensure that all expats have a vote. Also, they will be able to vote in the referendum on European Union membership.” Prime Minister David Cameron has said that he will let the people vote on the European Union and expats will be included.
