After months of speculation, former officer in the Life Guards and singer James Blunt and Sofia Wellesley, the granddaughter of the Duke of Wellington, celebrated their wedding at a small chapel on the Massana private estate in Campanet on Friday.
The couple, who have been dating since 2012 and became engaged in December 2013 and Sofia’s parents Lord John Henry Wellesley and Corinne Vaes have oned a property near Campanet for many years.
Sofia and her brother onces lived on the island and they went to school at the Academy in Marratxi.
A news blanket had been spread over Friday’s events with all those involved in organising what has been described as a “lavish” party, bound to secrecy because the guest list was rumoured toincludedthe likes of Sir Elton John, who launhed Blunt’s singing career, Pippa Middleton, who went to university with Sofia and even Prince Harry, who served under Blunt in the army. But event organisers said earlier this week that it would be an extremely private affair with no celebrity guests, apart from the groom ofcourse.
Despite the Majorcan surroundings it was a very English affair with some of the 45 guests being senior members of the British aristocracy.
The bride fell in love with Campanet when she lived on the island with her parents and attended the Academy School in Marratxi. James Blunt, now lives in Ibiza.
“It was a joyous occasion enjoyed by all,” said Reverand David Waller yesterday.
The wedding celebrations were due to continue this weekend in Ibiza.
“I think you can say that it was very English wedding with the scenic surroundings of Majorca,” the Anglican Chaplain added.
