I have often been criticised for being over negative about our tourist industry so today (and only today!) I will outline a resort on the island which in my opinion has everything and should be used as a blue-print for other parts of the island. I refer to Puerto Pollensa. Now, the Magalluf crowd may say that it is rather dull, but give me dull, it was a like breath of fresh air.  I stayed in the British-owned Hotel Sis Pins which is first class and ideal for a family with children. Pollensa was packed with thousands of British tourists of all ages. The bars and restaurants were also exceptionally busy and it was also nice to see that tourists were being greeted as old friends rather than just visitors. Much has been said about the African street vendors over recent months. Walking along the promenade one street vendor had set out “his stall” on the ground. My little daughter on seeing this took a liking to a rubber ball which she duely picked up. On  seeing this I asked the man how much it cost he smiled and said that she could have it as a present.  I found that sort of kidness all over Pollensa and it was lovely to see. Pollensa appears to have struck up a close bond with visiting tourists. They feel at home there. The ills which appear to dog the tourist industry in other parts of the island appear to have been cured in Pollensa. And if the “No” and “Yes” campaigns in Scotland are desperate for votes, then they should try the Sis Pins, because it is packed with Scottish tourists!
