MAJORCA has received quite a bashing this summer from the media. Car hire is expensive, eating out is not cheap, there are the on-going problems in Magalluf, but still it remains the top selling holiday destination in Britain and Germany. Two surveys by Post Office Money in the United Kingdom have slammed Majorca as being expensive and have underlined that there are cheaper resorts across the Mediterranean. This may be the case but still Majorca retains its crown. The reasons why this island is so popular is because it is unique. Beautiful beaches, scenic countryside and two hours flying time away from the northern Europe. Now Majorca has its faults but it has something for everyone. What concerns me though is that Majorca needs a plan for the future and everyone needs to know where it is going. The President of the Balearic Government, Jose Ramon Bauza, has said that he wants to take the tourist industry up-market but this is just a dream and not a reality. Majorca needs all sorts of tourism and there is space for all. Now obviously efforts to clean-up the Playa de Palma and Magalluf should be welcomed but I think that the local authorities should also ensure that the other resorts on the island have the necessary infrastructure and facilities. Hotels need to be up-graded because we live in a very competitive market place. This island is a fantastic place must the authorities must ensure that it remains so.
