Palma.—Refuse collectors were due to walk out on an indefinite strike next Tuesday, 22 July, but yesterday the works committee announced that they have decided to call off the industrial action and will continue negotiating with their bosses and the unions.
Directors of the municipal company have said over the past two days that they are prepared to discuss expanding the work force in order to improve the quality of its service and also ease the pressure on current employees.
It appears that in a letter to the directors of EMAYA, Palma City Council expressed its deep concern about the differences between them and the employees and the implications of a rubbish collection strike in the middle of the summer season.
The news was welcomed by the tourist industry, retails and business sectors and resident associations yesterday which has slammed the threatened strike as being "unacceptable and unjustifiable."
Had the strike gone ahead, it would have been illegal, according to the city council, and therefore would have had legal implications for those involved in the industrial action.
