The Balearic population grew by 5,259 last year to reach a total of 1.1 million while the Spanish population shrunk for the second consecutive year.

Palma.—The figures were released yesterday by the National Statistics Institute and they showed that the Balearic population bucked the national trend.
At the end of 2013, the total population was 1,115,374, 0.47 percent largest than at the close of 2012.
The only other region of Spain to have experienced population was the Canary Islands.
Apparently, the two main reasons for the increase in inhabitants here in the Balearics were that there were 2,844 more births than deaths and  that 5,002 more people moved to the Balearics from other regions of Spain than those who left.
However, 2,596 more people decided to move overseas  than those foreign residents opting to move here.
