TOURISTS SPEND LESS

Palma.—It will come as no great surprise to the businesses in the resorts but tourist spending fell by 4.7 percent during the first  five months of this year. And there was further bad news for the Balearics yesterday when official figures showed that the islands were one of the few places in the country where spending actually fell.
On average tourists spent 779 euros on their holiday in the Balearics during the first five months of this year. Overall foreign tourists left an estimated 2,000 million euros during their stay on the islands during this period.
But the figures can be slightly misleading because this 779 euros also includes the cost of the actual holiday and not just what is spent in the resorts. Sixty six percent of spending goes to pay for the hotel and flights. So really actual tourist spending is relatively low. Overall in Spain it is the British who are the biggest spenders, according to the official government figures.
Nationwide British tourists spent 3,806 million euros while on holiday in Spanish resorts. They were followed by the Germans with 3,374 million euros and then the Scandinavians.
