Editorial: Hot air

AFTER the spotlight having firmly been on Magalluf over the past few weeks prompting the authorities into agreeing to take some form of action, now the attention is on the Playa de Palma.
Palma City Council recently introduced a Good Citizens Plan, although subsequently postponed its full introduction until September so that specially trained members of the Local Police have sufficient time to inform the population about what the new laws are.
But, the Playa de Palma has apparently not been excluded and people disobeying the new laws should be being fined.
However, it does not look  like anything is being done to uphold the new laws such as  defacement of public property, begging, use of a public space to ask for sexual services, urinating in public places, the consumption of alcohol or drugs in public places and a ban on wearing swim wear on the streets because this weekend the beach was littered with glass bottles of alcohol, giant plastic bins, which once upon a time held gallons of sangria and cocktails, and general waste left behind by young holiday makers  armed with giant beat boxes pumping out their favourite hits and chants.
Local residents and business people have already expressed their fears that there is a lack of security in the resort this summer and the sight of the beach and promenade seems to suggest that they are right to be concerned. Come on, let’s see some action!
