Spain’s aerial emergency service, INAER, which is mainly responsible for tackling forest fires, has warned of a tough summer ahead.
Palma.—One of the biggest aerial battles fought last year was here in Majorca when the West and North West of Majorca was hit by the worst forest fire in the island’s history and yesterday, forest fire fighting chiefs agreed that this summer is going to a “tough” one.
The main reason is that winter and spring were unusually dry and for that reason, this year, INAER has 76 special helicopters and planes on stand by round the clock to respond to forest fires across the country.
Last year, INAER was involved in 5,300 extinction and prevention operations, flying over 7,100 hours, but there are fears that the figure could be much higher this summer.
