The Minister for Justice, Albert Ruiz Gallardon, yesterday said that the Spanish government does not pardon any politician “who has had their fingers in the till.”
And he said that the Partido Popular government will stand by its stance.
The announcement will come as a blow to the former PP Balearic President of the Balearics, Jaume Matas, who has been sentenced to serve nine months in jail on charges of corruption but had applied to the Minister for Justice for an official pardon.
