THE head of the Guardia Civil in the Balearics, Colonel Jaime Barcelo, is proposing that British police officers be sent to the Balearics to help their Spanish counterparts during the Summer months. They would be stationed in resorts which are popular with British tourists. This is not the first time that the Spanish authorities have asked Britain for help but I doubt that we will see officers heading for Magalluf and San Antonio in Ibiza. Isuspect that co-operation between the British and Spanish police forces will be stepped up even further. It probably isn´t a bad idea. The sight of British police officers walking up and down Calle Punta Ballena in Magalluf would probably act as a major deterrent. But the British officers would have limited powers. However, British officers have been involved in the policing of football matches involving English teams playing in Europe so perhaps this plan could be extended to tourist resorts as well. What is clear is that the local authorities and the police want to clear-up Magalluf and they are searching all avenues for solutions. The Calvia council have already promised additional police and the Foreign Office will be targeting British tourists heading to the resorts, through a campaign on social media. Magalluf is a unique place. It is Britain´s top party destination abroad. So will we be seeing PC John Smith and Official Juan Gonzalez patrolling Magalluf?Watch this space, you never know.
