Hotels in the Balearics recorded over 173,000 overnight stays in January, a significant decline in comparison to  2012’s 291,000 the National Statistics Institute said yesterday.

Palma.—Figures are far from encouraging for local hotels, whose occupation rate failed to reach one third of their capacity.
Average occupancy was  28.5 percent compared with the country’s average of 38.4. Comparing the region with the Canary Islands, the preferred destination for visitors last month which registered almost 77 percent occupation rate, and given the Balearics privileged location and natural conditions, tourism authorities are still  facing a battle to develop Winter tourism.
