Praise for Magalluf

|

ABOUT three months ago, I wrote in this space that Magalluf was not fit for purpose.  I would now like to change this statement to;the resort is perfectly fine it is the problem of street prostitutes, crime and some outrageous behaviour which is giving the resort a bad name. On Sunday I took a stroll around a deserted Magalluf  and I was quite impressed. Magalluf looks alot better than many other holiday destinations on the island and I would say that it is in a different league to some parts of the Playa de Palma. The money which has been invested by hotels chains and private enterprise is clearly visible. “It is not the resort, it is the people which ruin this place,” one veteran tourism official told me. He maybe right But I think times are changing. Big investment is being made in Magalluf by big companies which could have gone anywhere in the world but elected Magalluf. The Calvia council is promising more police and more close circuit security cameras and a crackdown on many of Magalluf´s ills. During my Magalluf winter tour, Imet a group of Majorcan pensioners who told me that they were astounded how nice Magalluf was. I did say that it was deserted! But they were impressed. “It was alot nicer than we  thought it would be,”one told me. So perhaps Magalluf does not deserve its reputation. It has a great beach, some great night-spots and as long as there is a police crackdown I think that it has a great future.
