Palma.—Lovers of opera and classical music will be pleased to know that the industrial action threatened by the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, which would have affected one of the performances of Verdi’s opera Rigoletto at the Teatre Principal and the seventh concert of the season, Mahler’s El canto de la tierra, conducted by Josep Vicent at the Auditorium, has been called off.
The orchestra appear to still be locked in a battle with the Balearic government, Palma City Council and the Council of Majorca over funding and the musicians were all set to go on strike at the end of this month in protest over not having been paid at the end of January.
In the end, the government stepped in and made sure that the funds were made available to pay the orchestra.
