EU citizens and Spanish lead boom in Palma’s population

Palma.—Two weeks ago, we published the foreign population figures for 2012 and, come 1 January 2013, 906 UK residents had left Palma during the previous 12 months, according to the National Statistics Inistitute.
However Palma’s population  increased by 4,018 inhabitants  last year, according to  the padron or official register, bringing the total population to 425,726  as of 1  January, 2014  with an increase of 133  UK residents during 2013.
This overall percentage increase of 0.9% is mainly due to  an influx of  Spanish and English residents, compared to the South Americans and Africans whose numbers have dropped over the past 12 months.
The Councillor  for Public Services and Government Affairs, Irene San Gil and  Population Services chief, Thomas Lladó, presented the data yesterday and said that after two years of population decline; 2010 ( -1.1%) and 2011 (-0.2 %) and the slight increase in 2011 ( 0.1 %) , last year there were clear signs of a return to   growth “with a more consolidated increase in the population,” San Gil said.
