PALMA
TWO people were seriously injured in the early hours of yesterday morning after a major collision between two vehicles in Calle Gremi Sabaters in Palma, Emergency Services confirmed.
The accident happened at around 2am when for reasons which are still being investigated, one vehicle ploughed into another, trapping one driver in the wreckage. Firemen needed an hour to free the victim who was taken by ambulance to the new general hospital of Son Espases.
The other seriously injured driver was also taken to Son Espases whilst a third person with lighter injuries was treated at the Clinica Juaneda.
The accident had formed part of a hectic Christmas Eve for the Emergency Services who handled no less than 809 calls through their control hub. Operations included the evacuation of the Abraxas discotheque on the Paseo Maritimo in Palma due to pepper gas being thrown by someone as a joke inside the building. No one needed medical treatment as a result.
Police and ambulance services were called to the scene of 14 brawls, 12 of which had taken place in public, and five traffic accidents.
Six people required treatment for having consumed too much alcohol. Another five who were suffering from the affects of having taken drugs needed to be seen by a doctor, and there were nine incidents of disturbances in homes, in bars and cafés and out in the street.
To add to their troubles, firemen had to tackle two blazes which had been started in rubbish containers.
Majorca had the highest toll of incidents with nine brawls, five traffic accidents, six people needing medical attention after having over-indulged in alcohol, five for drug consumption and five calls to quell disturbances in homes and public places.
The two rubbish containers had also been torched on Majorca.
The remainder of incidents were spread over Ibiza, Minorca and Formentera.
