THE Balearic environment ministry has started a programme to control the populations of starllings and pigeons in the centre of Palma by introducing five hawks in an artificial nest at the Cathedral bell tower. The results of the operation have been described as a success.
Ministry sources said that the project started last spring, with the collaboration of the Bishop's Office.
The ministry contracted a team of specialists who trapped five baby hawks from different parts of the island and moved them to the belfry, where they fed them, avoiding direct contact to stimulate their natural development. The hawks have adapted well, the sources said, and have become accustomed to hunting over the city.
