THE Belarus terror suspect arrested in Majorca was given food vouchers by the Palma mosque where he sought refuge and regularly went to pray.
The mosque in calle Juan Mestre, off the Manacor road, apparently has an arrangement with a number of local kebab houses so that it can help people in need who seek help at the mosque. Andrey M., who, witnesses have said was dirty and badly dressed, was given a number of food vouchers to cash in. However, as reported earlier this week, the imam turned down the suspected Islamic militant's request to sleep at the mosque.
Central government delegate Ramon Socias yesterday praised the efforts of the security forces involved in the Palma leg of the operation but admitted that more police are needed in the Balearics. He did however announce that over 700 Balearic residents have applied to be included in the next in-take of National Police cadets, adding that he hopes the Guardia Civil have a similar response from the local community when it launches its annual recruitment drive.
