THE Balearic Ministry for the Environment has ordered the company Acasa to stop releasing water contaminated with nitrates from its water purification plant in the area of the S'Albufera wetland.
In addition to this, the Ministry has started penalty proceedings against the company for the uncontrolled tipping of contaminated water from its purification plant, which opened in September and serves the residents of Alcudia and Sa Pobla.
The Ministry says that the technical solution to stop the dumping of this liquid contaminated with nitrates in the S'Albufera area lies in the application of a report from the Water Resources Department.
This report proposes that a pipe be constructed to take the contaminated water from the plant to the GESA power station in Es Murterar, where it could be used in the refrigeration process which is necessary during the production of energy.
Last week the residents of Sa Pobla and the Independents (the main opposition party on the council) complained about the dumping of the nitrate contaminated liquid.
Months ago they installed a pipe along that path which came from Son Barba and from which water contaminated with nitrates was poured onto the land.
This situation is a danger to public health as it is contaminating the aquifers, said the spokesperson for the Independents in Sa Pobla, Joan Comes.
The solution to this matter of the contaminated water seems closer now that the Balearic Government have intervened in the matter, ordering the immediate cessation of the uncontrolled dumping and the starting of penalty proceedings.
