PALMA
THE Balearic government has a new logo and it was unveiled yesterday by the Balearic president during the traditional Christmas toast at the government's Consolat de mar headquarters in Palma.
The new logo has been designed by the leading Majorcan artist Miguel Barcelo and it is hoped that it will help boost the Balearics' profile on the mainland and overseas.
Antich explained that Barcelo wanted the logo, which the artist designed for free, to express Mediterraneanism.
The Balearic islands are surrounded by the Mediterranean on all sides and I think the colour and design of the logo clearly show that, Antich said.
The president said that the logo expressed the identity of the islands and will feature on all official government documents.
Yesterday, Antich not only congratulated Barcelo for his work but all of his cabinet members for their hard work since the left wing coalition returned to power at the May elections.
I am extremely satisfied with the dedicated work they have carried out , he said before proclaiming that government has quickly established itself as one which listens, he added before praising the opposition Partido Popular for their willingness to cooperate and work together on key issues such as planning and land protection.
With regards to 2008, social welfare and well being is going to be top the political agenda.
Antich said the new government still has a number of key projects to launch in the New Year and that his ministers will continue doing everything possible to make it easier for people to get on the property ladder.
A new form of regional financing has also got to be thrashed out while work on the Palma to Arenal tram will start as will a number of other railway and public transport expansion and improvement projects. Our primary concern is to put the best interests of the people first, said Antich. We want to solve the population's problems and create an environment of greater social cohesion and integration, he added.
