PALMA
MAJORCA was still mopping up yesterday after days of torrential rain and heavy snowfalls lashed the region.
The north and west of the island were particularly hard-hit by the barrage of bad weather and some residents forecast that it will take days before the standing water clears from gardens, terraces and roads.
Emergency services and civil protection workers were yesterday still aiming to help people trapped in their homes because of the rising flood water caused by the storms.
Thousands of people telephoned the services for help during the battering, and crews were still trying to work their way through the backlog of appeals for help.
Callers were informed that they would not be attended to if they had food and supplies in their homes and they were told to stay indoors if at all possible.
While urban areas such as Palma city centre, and much of Calvia's main holiday resorts of Magalluf, Palmanova and Santa Ponsa dried very quickly, householders and businesses in more outlying districts faced massive problems caused by the rain and melting snow. .
