PALMA
THE Guardia Civil began their interrogation in Palma yesterday of the Balearic air traffic controllers who abandoned their posts on 3rd and 4th December as part of a nationwide wildcat strike.
The questioning will attempt to establish whether or not the controllers were guilty of sedition, outlawed in Spain under Aviation Legislation in 1964.
The Prosecution Service in the Balearic Islands confirmed that after having ordered a military takeover of the control towers at Spanish airports, the national government had authorised the Guardia Civil to start the process of interrogating the air traffic controllers. After statements have been taken, it will then fall to the assessment of a presiding judge as to whether or not the next stage of criminal proceedings is warranted, or not.
The Balearic Prosecutor is not going to interfere in the case until the preliminary stages are complete.
