OVER 46 percent of people in the Balearic Islands who found themselves without work last October were not paid unemployment benefit for that month.
The State Employment Services in the Balearics, SPEE (formerly INEM), said yesterday that only 30'551 out of the 56'892 jobless collected benefit for that month. Non payment results from claimants failing to provide evidence they are entitled to benefit. To receive unemployment payouts, it is a requirement that claimants were once employed and many who received no payment in October are youngsters looking for their first job or housewives who are trying to return to the job market place after some years devoted to family life. In order to claim, a person has also to be registered with Social Security.
