THE new medical centre in Plaza Gomila will offer healthcare to nearly 4'400 people next year, 554 of whom are over 65, said regional Health minister Vicenç Thomas yesterday.

During a visit to the new building, Thomas said that the medical centre has been designed to cope with a growing population and is “more comfortable and more practical”. The premises are replacing the current health centre where conditions have been described as “inadequate.” Compared to the current 75 square metres, the new unit will spread over 470, split up over two storeys with five consulting rooms, three more than at present, a reception area on the ground floor, with administration offices and facilities modified to service the disabled.

Thomas confirmed that the works on the premises which have been ceded by Palma City Council, were being carried out at a cost of 780'000 euros and were due for completion in 2010.
