November was 2nd worst month of the year for small traders

STAFF REPORTER

PALMA
NEARLY 80 percent of businesses on Majorca have said that their November sales were worse this year than during the same month in 2008, said small to medium-sized traders' association, Pimeco yesterday.

Though just over 20 percent said there had been no year-on-year difference, none at all said they had been better. Pimeco's monthly report also confirmed that results were “slightly worse” in outlying areas of the island than they were in Palma.

Pimeco said that 75 percent of traders in Palma said they had sold less in November this year than in the same month in 2008 whilst a further 25 percent claimed there was no appreciable difference. But in outlying areas, the figures rose to 80 and 20 percent respectively.

However, 13 percent of those interviewed said that sales in November were better than in October, another 24 percent said there was no difference from one month to the next and 63 percent described the difference as “clearly worse”. Again the situation appears to have been worse in areas of Majorca outside Palma where 75 percent of shopkeepers said they had sold less.
