Palma de Majorca. The Partido Popular (PP) Mayor of Llubí Joan Ramis said yesterday that he is prepared to lead a demonstration by local residents to demand that the project for the town's bypass be completed. Construction was put on hold last September because the regional government failed to pay the contractor.
The constructor cut the Son Burguet road (one of the most used in the area by residents wanting to reach their homes in the country), just before the project was abandoned. As a result, many people have since been forced to take a longer alternative route across land temporarily made available for the purpose by an estate owner.
But the land is not appropriate for traffic in winter weather and just last week, an 82-year-old man had to be rescued after his vehicle became stuck in the mud following heavy rainfall.
One of the residents said after a meeting with neighbours at the end of last week that a short term alternative would be to build an iron bridge such as those used by the army.
Meanwhile, Joan Ramis said that he is prepared to lead his constituents in a demonstration should it be necessary but doubted that short term solutions being put forward by the residents would be legally possible.
Ramis said that he regularly calls the government to ask what is going to happen. He has apparently been told the contractors have been paid up until April this year but that the project will be modified.
