65-year-old woman dies in Soller crash

Palma.—The victim, identified as Maria Estela Muñoz, had been travelling as a passenger in a Blue Ford Ka along calle Pintor Juli Ramis when the accident occurred at 10.33, the first emergency calls to the 061 and 112 centres were received at 10.37.

Within minutes, the local doctor was at the scene and support from teams of ambulances and paramedics was not far behind.
The accident happened on a bend in the road and it appears that the driver lost control and crashed into the edge of a house.
Local residents rushed out into the street to provide first aid but the scene was far more serious than they expected.
Both women were trapped in the vehicle and members of the Council of Majorca fire brigade were needed to cut the two victims free from the wreckage. Sadly, there was nothing that could have been done to have saved the life of the passenger but the driver escaped with her life, although she was rushed to Son Llatzer Hospital in Palma for treatment to the multiple injuries she sustained.

While the exact cause of the tragic accident remained to be confirmed last night, sources close to the investigation said that it would appear that the driver suffered an anxiety attack, began panicking and put her foot on the accelerator. Hence the impact against the building was so fierce and fatal.

The family of the victim was extremely well known in Soller and the town was in shock last night.
