PALMA
THE seven-year-old British girl who fell 30 feet from a hotel balcony while on holiday in Majorca last month, has been released from hospital in England.
Gianna Cooper from Foxton, Cambridgeshire, fell from the balcony of the fifth-floor room she was sharing with her mother at the Hotel Samoa in the south eastern resort of Calas de Mallorca, on 22 October.
The body of her mother Sara Cooper, 45, was found in a water cave close to the resort two days after the balcony fall.
The mother drowned and eye witnesses later claimed that they had seen the woman walking in and out of the sea just 200 metres from their hotel.
A huge air, sea and land search operation was mounted within hours of the mother going missing and the ports and airport were put on full alert as concerns for her well being mounted as the hours passed.
Gianna was eventually airlifted back to England and treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, for head injuries suffered in the 30ft (9.2m) fall and she may now be quizzed by Palma police investigating the case.
Her father Ian Cooper sat by her hospital bed in Majorca's Son Dureta hospital until she was transferred to Addenbrooke's.
He has since thanked doctors at the hospitals in Manacor, where she was first treated, and then Palma, for saving his daughter's life on a number of occasions.
Cooper was sharing the adjacent room with two of Gianna's three brothers.
The eldest had remained in the UK. Investigating police in Majorca have said only Gianna could say if she was pushed or fell from the balcony but have been waiting for her to recover from her multiple injuries before making any attempt to question her.
It is understood that Gianna was informed of her mother's death over two weeks ago and that the investigation in Majorca remains open.
Palma police will either send a specialist team to the UK to question Gianna in person or send a list of questions to colleagues in Cambridge.
