San Vicente Ferrer Cloister re-opens after extensive restoration

THE newly renovated San Vicente Ferrer Cloister, located in Manacor, will be officially opened today by the councillors from the Ministry of Culture.
The whole buidling has been reinforced and a system to control the extension of damp has also been installed in the pillars and balustrades.
The floor on the first floor in the gated gallery of the cloister has also been raised, so as to make the structure lighter, said a spokesperson from the Ministry yesterday. Furthermore non-rusting steel bars have been installed to make the arches and walls stronger, and in order to stop the building falling down.
The parts of the pillars and arches which had fallen down, have now been restored, and also electricity work has been carried out.
The San Vicente Ferrer Cloister, which is categorised as a Historic Artistic Monument since 1919 and considered as Good of Cultural Interest in 1985, was built between the end of the 16th Century and the 18th Century. Most of the work to build the cloister was carried out by local tradesmen.
