THE Muslim community yesterday marked the beginning of the Eid al-Adha or Festival of Sacrifice by gathering for prayers across the island.
The largest gathering was held at the Palma Arena velodrome where hundreds of Muslims joined in prayers.
The Eid al-Adha is a holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God and lasts at least three days, depending on the country.
Sheep, goats or cows are sacrificed as part of the festival as a symbol of Ibrahim's sacrifice and all Muslims are bound to ensure that no one goes hungry during the four-day religious holiday.
Eid al-Adha always occurs the day after the pilgrims conducting Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, descend from Mount Arafat.
