AIR Berlin, the low cost airline, has highlighted the advantages of using Palma airport as a hub (flight interconnection centre).
A company spokesman said it is much simpler in comparison with airports like Madrid or Barcelona, where it is very inconvenient for passengers to change terminals. The company is promoting the advantages of the airport to tour operators in the tourist sector so that they can check its efficiency. The commercial director of Air Berlin in Spain and Portugal, Pablo Caspers, explained the airline's intention at a meeting with the media and travel agents to present their new route between Milan and Palma and said that this hub is an alternative which connects Spain and the Balearic Islands to Europe. Caspers added that the airline is planning to increase the 310 weekly flights offered this summer from Palma to 360 in 2007, which will be a large increase for the hub. At the same time the commercial director announced that from April 1 2007 the company will offer direct flights between Palma and Copenhagen, due to the demand from this destination. Also, Air Berlin and NIKI have made public their offers for next Summer (from April 1 to October 31 2007) and have said that the first people to reserve tickets will be able to buy their tickets at a very special price. At the same time, Caspers said that travellers could also reserve tickets for domestic flights within Germany with Air Berlin-dba. Finally, the German low cost airline said that from the middle of May 2007 it would start flights which will link Rimini (Italy) with Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Karlsruhe and Munich.
