PALMA
PRESIDENT of the Balearic Islands, Francesc Antich, announced yesterday that work on the under sea gas pipeline which will connect the Balearics with the mainland will begin on Monday this coming week.
The gas supply will be used to convert into electricity at generating stations in the Balearics and will reportedly guarantee the Islands its own power supply.
Antich, who confirmed that the pipeline project running from Denia to Majorca (via Ibiza) will be completed in June next year, said that the beginning of the works will consist of lining up piping sections in the tube casing provided for it on Ibiza; that is to say from the cliffs down to the sea bed.
