Onieva is PP choice for Calvia

MANUEL Onieva is to be the Partido Popular (PP) candidate for the Mayor of Calvia in the local elections of May next year.
Onieva emerged victorious on Tuesday evening from a primary selection round held by the PP, in which he triumphed over rival Calvia Council candidates Teresa Martorell and Bartomeu Bonafe.

Onieva is already President of the PP in Calvia and had been the “official” favourite to replace the current PP Mayor, Carlos Delgado. He won 57.4 percent of the vote, leaving Martorell and Bonafe to share the remainder.

After an hour and a half of party decision-making, the three candidates accompanied by Balearic PP President Jose Ramon Bauza, the Majorcan PP President Joan Rotger and Carlos Delgado appeared before the waiting media outside party headquarters in Calvia. Balearic President Bauzá broke the news of the results and after thanking all party members for their participation in the election process, stood aside for Onieva to make a speech.

The new candidate for the Mayor of Calvia began by saying that the internal voting had been a “model of democracy” and confirmed - in a reference to Martorell and Bonafé - that “there would be room for everyone” in the new Partido Popular political team appointed for the elections in May.

Onieva also praised the conduct of the present Mayor, saying that Delgado had behaved with complete impartiality throughout the election process, refusing to show any favouritism to any one of the candidates and even not exercising his own right to vote.

Onieva said that now was hardly the moment to celebrate a victory as there was a great deal of work to be done to secure a PP victory in Calvia in the next elections.
