GOVERNMENT CREATES PUBLIC SERVICE SECTOR JOBS

STAFF REPORTER
THE Balearic government agreed yesterday to allocate 3.2 million euros to different town councils and public service organisations around the Islands for the creation of jobs for 307 unemployed people.

Regional government spokeswoman, Joana Barcelo said yesterday that the subsidies will be drawn from this year's budget and that the money will cover the new employees' total salary cost along with their Social Security contributions. The jobs to be created are linked to 122 public works projects planned throughout the Balearics which in the long term envisage providing employment to an even greater figure of 648 people. Barcelo confirmed that yesterday's government meeting had already approved 150'000 euros worth of funding to get the ball rolling. Separately, at the request of the regional Ministry for Employment, the government has agreed to furnish nearly 202'000 euros to Advanced Technology organisation “MIITA” to provide specialised training courses for the unemployed. Barcelo said that the present government's policy is to provide training opportunities for those without work, claiming that the more a person can diversify their skills, the more chance they have of getting a foot on the job ladder.
