MANY people in the Balearics believe that tourism will drag the islands' economy out of recession, a poll reveals.
The latest survey highlighted the hopes of 67 percent of the working population of the region who felt that tourism would be able to create enough jobs to absorb employment cuts from other sectors, such as construction.
However, the new jobs were mainly low-quality occupations, said 54.9 percent of people questioned in the survey by a Spanish magazine.
Almost 74 percent also pointed out that tourism jobs were only available for a fixed period of time during the peak summer season.
In Majorca, half the people polled said they felt their economic prospects would worsen this year and almost 80 percent said they thought the economic situation would become more serious before it improved.
Over 80 percent feared they could lose their jobs this year and 12 percent of Palma workers said they thought they may have to leave the capital to gain employment. Seven percent feared they may need to go abroad to find work.
