Lluc. The economic crisis has reached Lluc monastery. Because the Balearic government hasn't paid the management foundation subsidies worth 120'000 euros which were promised in the 2011 Balearic budget, it has had to dig deep into its savings and find the money from its own resources.
The prior of Lluc monastery, Jaume Reynes, said yesterday that the subsidies had been divided up into two sections, one for 30'000 euros for general expenses and another for 90'000 euros for other costs associated with music teaching.
The President of the new Partido Popular Balearic government, José Ramón Bauzá has blamed his predecessors for the fact that the subsidies for Lluc monastery have not materialised. The foundation has also been in heated negotations about what it can expect next year. The Balearic government has said that it will provide 60'000 euros and the Council of Majorca a further 25'000. But the 85'000 euros, says the foundation, is not sufficient for all its needs.
On hold
Meanwhile, Jaume Reynes has confirmed that reforms which were being carried out to the external reception area and frontage of the monastery have been put on hold until there is news that there will be public funding coming through. The foundation also has plans to make some of its enterprises, such as the monastery museum self-financing.
