PALMA
ALL motorways and dual carriageways approved for construction by the previous Balearic government are to be struck off a road building programme set for approval next month, said Francina Armengol, the President of the Council of Majorca yesterday.
Armengol said that instead, the Council will approve road-widening projects which will not eat unnecessarily into the countryside and which conform to bylaws already established under the island's planning laws. Thus there will be major changes to the Road Plan in its original form, one of the most principal of which is the removal of the proposed Inca to Manacor motorway, and the second Palma ring road. Traffic congestion on the original ring road, said Armengol, will be eased through less environmentally-damaging relief roads.
