Inter-island fares to be cut

MABEL Cabrer, the Balearic minister of public works, housing and transport, confirmed yesterday that the central government has agreed to reduce the cost of tickets for inter-island flights in the Balearics to 27.5 euros plus taxes. However, the central government will retain control and there will be no further funding for the islands.
Cabrer said that the Balearic government had asked the central ministry of transport to cancel the residents' discount for flights between the islands, and for this to be used to reduce the cost of flights. She added that this would bring the price down from 82 to 27.5 euros, “for anybody travelling between Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza, whatever their nationality.” The move will benefit non-European Union residents who are not entitled to the discount.
However, Cabrer was unable to say when the new prices would come into force.
The central ministry will have to draw up a calendar for this.
Cabrer added that the number of flights and seats proposed by her department has been accepted.
