Anti-corruption probe opened into Palma Arena

NEWSDESK

PALMA
THE anticipated anti-corruption investigation into the construction of the Palma Arena velodrome by the previous conservative Partido Popular government led by the Washington-based Jaume Matas began yesterday.

The initial budget for the construction of the sports complex was set at 48 million euros but, by its completion for the World Indoor Track Championships, the project cost 100 million euros to finish. A team of investigators, including the two anti-corruption judges Juan Carrau and Pedro Horrach, yesterday visited the Arena and spent over four hours inspecting the complex.

The investigation has been opened after financial irregularities were apparently uncovered in an audit carried out by the new Balearic government. The judges are also studying the velodrome's plans.
